When it comes to ensuring that consumers get the cleanest, safest, best-protected cannabis, Washington State is at the cutting edge. However, as with so many of the products we buy and use on a regular basis, to some degree, it’s up to individual growers and retailers to ensure they are providing the best organic marijuana.

While the State mandates inspection and certification of marijuana growers, to some extent, this is still a process under development. As part of a contract signed last year, the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) and the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) have partnered to better monitor the use of illegal pesticides on marijuana.

Here are some of the steps that Origin Cannabis—and our select suppliers—take to make sure you’re receiving the very best organic marijuana.

Organic Marijuana? Is That a Thing?

Technically, no. The term “organic” is reserved for legal use by the USDA to describe agricultural products that meet their strict definition. This includes growers forgoing the use of particular pesticides, steroids, and other chemicals and additives to spur faster growth in plants and animals (some pesticides are still allowed during organic farming).

As we’ve written before, we take the potential of pesticides and contaminants entering one’s system through cannabis very seriously. Because we inhale, imbibe, or otherwise absorb cannabis into our respiratory and digestive systems, it’s absolutely crucial that the marijuana Origins sells is free of pesticides and other contaminants such as mold, which can expose you to compounds known as mycotoxins and endotoxins.

Chronic exposure to these pro-inflammatory molds and mildews can aggravate autoimmune conditions and increase a user’s chances of developing a respiratory or other infection.

Clean Weed: Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands

For all these reasons and more, we initiated our proprietary Origins Certified™ program. It’s a straightforward and rigorous contract we sign with our select growers for ensuring that the organic marijuana we sell is as clean, safe, and as contaminant-free as humanly possible. Origins Certified™ means our growers must:

  • Sign an affidavit, affirming full understanding of requirements.
  • Participate in organoleptic analysis and feedback.
  • Submit to quarterly visits and audits by an Origins Certified™ team member.
  • Ensure the package date does not exceed 45 days from the date of delivery.
  • Have all testing completed by an approved analytics provider.
  • Undergo phenotype terpene testing for all new and existing strains sold by Origins.
  • Allow third-party lab analysis of random quarterly pesticide and heavy metal testing.
  • Permit regular hosted farm visits from Origins buyers who will hand-select lots and strains to be purchased.

Okay, But…Why is Cannabis So Expensive?

One of the tradeoffs of legalization is that cannabis is now regulated and inspected, with certain dispensaries (such as ourselves) going over and above the legal requirements to supply safe cannabis. Of course, there’s a cost associated with these benefits.

That said, legalization also ensures much greater access, and the natural competition of the marketplace actually drives prices down. Believe it or not, new research confirms: cannabis has actually never been cheaper!

If you’re interested in safeguarding your health with organic marijuana (or the closest thing, our Origins Certified™ cannabis), we hope you’ll come in and learn a bit more about how—and why—we go the extra mile here at Origins. And as always, if you’ve got any questions, you know where to find us.
